Afrikans for Retention and Outreach: Living and Learning community was established to unite Afrikan students at UC Merced and to help increase their retention at the University. In order to help students succeed academically, Afro Terrace hosts weekly study sessions where students are able to work in a quite and motivating atmosphere. Tutors are available at the study session by demand. Additionally, the club provides academic and professional development workshops throughout the year. Our book loan program is another resource for all active members. It helps to alleviate some of the financial hardships some may encounter when purchasing textbooks. Afro has also organized a mentoring program which has been beneficial for students transitioning to the university. The mentors of the program have served as guides, resources, friends and role models to the mentees. Another focus for the club is community outreach in which opportunities are available throughout the year for students to participate in. Afro is also a part of the student initiated learning communities program which gives interested club members the opportunity to reside together in an inclusive and supportive community. After its first year, Afro was recognized as UC Merced's New Outstanding Organization of the Year in Spring 2015.
