Thelma C. Hurd, M.D., M.P.H., a surgical oncologist, is Director of Medical Education and Professor of Public Health at UC Merced, and Adjunct Professor of Surgery at UCSF-Fresno. Dr.Hurd completed her General Surgery training and research fellowship at the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and clinical and research oncology fellowships at the Ohio State University and MD Anderson Cancer Center, respectively. In 2018, she received her M.P.H. in Global Health Leadership at George Washington University.
Dr. Hurd is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Her clinical research has focused on trust in clinical trials, health disparities in underserved populations, markers of breast cancer progression and special surgical techniques such as lymphatic mapping/sentinel node biopsy. Her basic science research focused on investigations of HER2-neu and urinary plasminogen activator in breast cancer. Dr. Hurd’s recognitions for outstanding contributions to healthcare and community outreach include a New York State Congressional Citation for excellence in community work and health care and the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service.
