The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences, an NSF-Funded, community-based project, is designed to increase the number of students in the mathematical sciences who earn doctoral degrees and enter the workforce in a related field.

The Alliance dates back to 2007 and has grown rapidly. It now comprises a community of more than 200 math-sciences faculty members at undergraduate and master's serving institutions, 25 graduate program groups in graduate math-sciences programs, and more than 400 math-sciences majors and master's students nationally.

Professor Roummel Marcia will give a brief history of the Alliance and describe its objectives, programs and philosophy. The focus will be on UC Merced's graduate program and on the process by which a math-sciences department forms a graduate program group.
